The NAT Canyoneer Hike- Monserate Mountain

  • 243 Horse Ranch Creek Road Fallbrook, CA, 92028 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Lace up your hiking shoes and take in that fresh air with our Canyoneers. These volunteer naturalists have offered free, guided hikes throughout the county since 1973. They're here to help you get to know San Diego County's wild spaces like no one else, whether you join a guided hike or hit the trails on your own time. As always, learn how to be prepared and hike responsibly.

Saturday, April 11, 2026 9 AM | Capacity: 25 people.

This steep, heart-pumping hike is sure to have a fantastic panoramic view.

The Monserate Mountain Trail loop starts out with a steep, heart-pumping, 1200 foot climb. Along the way, you'll find trail markers that represent every 10 stories of the original World Trade Center, placed there for the Fallbrook Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Hill Climb. This area is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including the endangered California gnatcatcher. At the top, enjoy panoramic views of the Peninsular Range to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Head straight back down or hike a loop that rewards you with more great views into the Agua Tibia Mountains. This is a difficult 4-mile hike with an elevation change of 1500 feet. The hike is scheduled from 9 AM–1 PM.

(Fallbrook) From I-15, take Exit 46 (CA-76) east and go 0.7 mile. Turn left on Horse Ranch Creek Rd. and go 1.7 miles (Note that Horse Ranch Creek Rd. turns into Pankey Rd. after crossing Friesian Way). Park along the road at the trailhead. If you reach Stewart Canyon Rd. you have gone too far. No facilities. (GPS N33.36585, W117.15925)

International Dark Sky Week

International Dark Sky Week is a worldwide event that draws attention to light pollution, promotes simple solutions to mitigate the issue, and celebrates the irreplaceable beauty of a natural night.

International Dark Sky Week (IDSW) was started by high school student Jennifer Barlow in 2003 and is now spearheaded by DarkSky International. In explaining why she started the week, Barlow said, “I want people to be able to see the wonder of the night sky without the effects of light pollution. The universe is our view into our past and our vision into the future. I want to help preserve its wonder.”

Help spread the word about light pollution and the importance of dark skies. This week is a great excuse to talk with friends, family, neighbors, your homeowner’s association, or government representatives about why protecting our night environment is so crucial.

MOVIE SCREENING: Fallbrook – A Village of Trees and Tree Heroes

MOVIE SCREENING: Fallbrook – A Village of Trees and Tree Heroes

Join us in Fallbrook for a cool movie night celebrating trees and the heroes who protect them!

Join us for this special premiere at the historic Mission Theatre as we honor the tree heroes who helped make Fallbrook the Village of Trees.

For more than 30 years, ordinary citizens in an unincorporated town did something extraordinary.

They planted trees. Thousands of them.

Fallbrook - A Village of Trees and Tree Heroes tells the story of how a small group of neighbors transformed their town into a living canopy, preserving it's rural character and proving that civic particpation still matters.

This film honors the volunteers, visionaries, and quiet leaders who planted trees they knew they might never sit beneath. It is a story of stewardship, gratitude, and legacy. And of the next generation now called to carry it forward.

Following the screening, stay for a brief conversation with filmmakers and community leaders.

Sept 11th 9/11 Memorial Hike

Since 2013, the Fallbrook Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Hill Climb, honoring the memory of 343 firefighters killed when the twin towers collapsed, has been held here at Monserate Mountain.  The FLC is proud to host this event, which is organized by the North County Fire Protection District.

In 2018, eighteen trail markers were installed on two trails to provide safety and location points for hikers.

In an emergency, call 9-1-1 and inform the dispatcher that you are on the Monserate Mountain Trail in Fallbrook and provide them with the alphanumeric posted on the nearest trail marker. This is the fastest way for rescue services to find you.

The trail markers A1 – A11 also represent every 10 floors of the former World Trade Center's twin towers, honoring the fallen first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 and all those dedicated to saving the lives of others.  The markers are a combined project of Troop 718 Eagle Scout candidate Joseph Greenwood, the North County Fire Protection District, Palomar College Geographic Information Systems program, Fallbrook Village Rotary and the Fallbrook Land Conservancy.

Master Composter Schedule:

9am - 12pm

Location - Palomares House, 1815 South Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook, CA, 92028

Field Trip - April 18, 10am - 11am at San Pasqual Valley Soils

After completing this 5-week course, you will have a better understanding of how to:

  • Minimize your carbon footprint and reduce methane emissions by keeping food and yard waste out of the landfill.

  • Create natural nutrient-rich soil amendments with your food and yard waste that help your garden grow.

  • Avoid using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

  • Reduce water use and increase water retention. Compost increases your soil’s water-holding capacity and improves water retention.

The Master Composter course provides training in the art and science of composting through lectures, demonstrations, and a field trip. The course covers the following topics:

  • In-depth traditional composting and the basics of composting with worms (vermicomposting)

  • Compost bin building and troubleshooting (in teams!)

  • The microbiology of composting, including the role of fungi and bacteria

  • Bokashi fermentation for saving food scraps to compost

  • Macrodecomposers in your compost pile

  • The environmental impacts of composting

  • … and much more!

Field Trip

Our field trip's leader, Craig M. Kolodge Ph.D., serves as the Business Development and Sustainability Manager for San Pasqual Valley Soils. This large-scale composting facility processes up to 75,000 cubic yards of yard trimmings and cow manure from their neighboring Konyn Dairy each year. These materials are added to their beautifully tended windrows, and result as high-quality mulch and compost. This is an optional part of the course but is highly recommended due to Dr. Kolodge's expertise.

About Dr. Kolodge - Craig Kolodge, Ph.D., is the former academic advisor, field plant pathologist, and county director for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in Santa Clara County. And he is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) and an expert in the use of compost-based Sustainable Management Practices (SMPs) for stormwater management and industrial pollution management (Trainer of Record for Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner - QISP statewide program).

Residents of unincorporated County of San Diego receive preferential registration. All others will be placed on a waitlist and apprised of space available 1-2 weeks before the start of the course.

BEFORE REGISTERING, please enter your address here to check your residency. You can select the County of San Diego Residents ticket option ONLY if your jurisdiction boundary result is exactly “S.D. COUNTY.” All others must select the waitlist option.

How to get certified: Master Composter certification requires attendance at all 5 classes, as well as 30 volunteer hours of related community service. Certification is optional.

Defending the Dark screening at Fallbrook libary

Defending the Dark screening at Fallbrook libary

Defending the Dark inspires and informs viewers on why it is important to preserve dark sky areas, while emphasizing the unique dark sky environment of northern Maine.

Dark Skies benefit wildlife and their habitats, reduces health and safety risks to humans, saves energy, and reduces costs. Light pollution has devastating effects on migrating birds, native plants, and pollinators. Defending the Dark tells the story of protecting the dark sky areas of Maine – the last such areas in the US east of the Rocky Mountains, and what we can do in our own backyards to bring back the night sky. It's more than just saving the stars: Dark skies need to be protected for our health, safety, nature, and science.

Screening time TBA: at Fallbrook Library.
