California Fish and Game Commission voted to grant Threatened Status

In February, the California Fish and Game Commission voted to list mountain lion populations in parts of southern California and the central coast as a threatened species under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA).

“This segment of the mountain lion population is clearly at risk from distinct threats,” said President Eric Sklar. “Habitat loss, habitat fragmentation by roads, freeways and housing, and mortality from vehicle strikes, rodenticides and risks of isolation and inbreeding would lead to the extinction of these mountain lions if we remained on the same trajectory.”

This decision demonstrates California’s commitment to science-based stewardship and to ensuring that future generations inherit a landscape where mountain lions still roam.

Here are key tips that wildlife experts commonly recommend:

  • Protect their habitat: Support conservation of wild lands and wildlife corridors so mountain lions can move safely between habitats.

  • Secure attractants: Keep pets indoors at night, secure trash, and protect livestock with proper enclosures. This reduces situations where lions are drawn into neighborhoods.

  • Never feed wildlife: Feeding deer or other prey animals can attract mountain lions into residential areas.

  • Drive carefully in wildlife areas: Mountain lions are sometimes struck by vehicles, especially near canyon roads and mountain highways.

  • Report sightings responsibly: If a lion appears sick, injured, or unusually bold, notify the California Department of Fish and Wildlife so trained professionals can respond.
