Monserate Mountain Preserve

Monserate Mountain sits high above Fallbrook, offering steep trails and panoramic views. The land we now call Monserate Mountain Preserve was once part of the larger Rancho Monserate (or Monserate Land Grant), a Mexican land grant awarded in 1846 to Ysidro María Alvarado. Over time, as the region developed and land changed hands, the mountain remained prized for its natural habitat—especially coastal sage scrub—and its visibility as a landmark from much of northern San Diego County.

In 2000, the Fallbrook Land Conservancy acquired the first 225 acres of what would become the preserve, land that had been owned by a partnership known as Heights of Pala Mesa LLC, which had held the property with plans for development. Over the following years, additional acreage was added (about 115 more acres in 2003-2004), and finally in 2018 FLC acquired the ~7.3 acres containing the trailhead, thereby ensuring safe public access to the summit.

The preserve’s trail is fairly steep: the main route to the summit gains substantial elevation (around 1,200-1,300 feet) over about 1.5 miles, and rewards hikers with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Peninsular (Agua Tibia) Range to the east. Along the way, the flora includes coastal sage scrub and chaparral, with spring wildflowers, native aromatic plants (like white sage and California sagebrush), and wildlife including sensitive species such as the California Gnatcatcher.

Monserate Mountain has also become a site of community and memorial events. Since 2013, it has been the location of the “Fallbrook Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Hill Climb,” an annual hike up Monserate in memory of the 343 firefighters who perished on September 11, 2001. To help with safety and orientation, in 2018 trail markers were installed on two trails, including a set of markers (A1-A11) that also serve to honor the floors of the Twin Towers.
