DARK SKY COMMITTEE

Our mission is to protect and restore Fallbrook's natural nightscapes by reducing light pollution, safeguarding nocturnal ecosystems, promoting biodiversity, and enhancing health and well-being through advocacy, education, and community involvement.

The Fallbrook Land Conservancy Dark Sky Committee is a community-driven initiative dedicated to protecting and restoring Fallbrook’s natural nightscapes.

Protecting our natural resources goes beyond water, land, and air—it also means preserving the night sky. By promoting shielded, low-impact lighting and hosting educational events such as star-viewing nights, the Committee helps residents experience the beauty of an unspoiled night sky while protecting the ecosystems that rely on natural darkness.

About the Initiative

The Dark Sky Committee is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Fallbrook’s night skies by reducing light pollution and promoting responsible outdoor lighting practices. As part of an initiative to achieve certification as an International Dark Sky Community, the committee works with residents, businesses, and organizations to raise awareness about the benefits of dark skies for wildlife, human health, and energy conservation. Through community outreach, advocacy, and events, we strive to protect Fallbrook’s rural character and ensure that future generations can enjoy a clear view of the stars.

The Five Principles of Responsible Outdoor Lighting

At the heart of our work are the five internationally recognized principles of responsible outdoor lighting. These guidelines form the foundation of our outreach and advocacy efforts:

1. Useful – Light only what is needed.

2. Targeted – Direct light only where it’s needed.

3. Low Light Levels – Use the lowest amount of light necessary.

4. Controlled – Use timers, motion sensors, and dimmers to minimize unnecessary lighting.

5. Color – Choose warmer-colored lights that reduce blue light emissions.

Following these principles helps reduce glare, save energy, protect wildlife, and preserve our view of the stars.

Get Involved

We are always looking for volunteers and community partners who share our passion for protecting Fallbrook’s night skies. Whether you’d like to help with outreach events, educational programs, or community lighting improvement projects, there are many ways to participate. If you are part of a local organization, school, or homeowners’ association (HOA) and would like our committee to give a presentation about FLC’s Dark Sky Initiative and the importance of responsible outdoor lighting, we would love the opportunity to share what we’re doing and how your group can get involved.
